Kulturanalys Norden – our assignment
Kulturanalys Norden generates statistics and other knowledge of relevance to Nordic cultural policy. Kulturanalys Norden was initiated by the Nordic cultural ministries, is funded the Nordic Council of Ministers, and is located at the Swedish Agency for Cultural Policy Analysis, Myndigheten för kulturanalys.
Our assignment is to generate knowledge that is useful to decision-makers seeking to advance Nordic cultural policy and enhance Nordic cultural life. Our work is carried out in three sub-areas:
Statistics and cultural participation
We are working to promote a long-term systematic coordination of Nordic cultural statistics.
Evaluations and cultural policy analyses
We perform evaluations and analyses of cultural policy issues that can contribute to cultural policy knowledge of relevance to Nordic cooperation on cultural policy, national agencies, Nordic cultural research and cultural practitioners in the Nordic countries. We can initiate our own studies and projects concerning issues that we consider relevant, but we can also be tasked by the Nordic Council of Ministers with conducting special cultural policy studies.
We disseminate knowledge in the area of Nordic cultural policy by publishing reports, arranging cultural policy conferences and using other means to promote knowledge dissemination and dialogue pertinent to our areas of knowledge.
Kulturanalys Norden is to serve as a nexus between the Nordic countries’ cultural agencies, cooperative bodies and institutions, cultural policy researchers and central statistics bureaus. One important part of this work is that of initiating networks and collaboration with researchers, statisticians and other cultural policy experts in order to share in their knowledge and export the results of our own analyses.
Guiding our efforts
Our work within Kulturanalys Norden is guided by the Nordic Council of Ministers’ 2013–2020 strategy for Nordic cultural cooperation (also known as the Nordic cultural strategy), on which the Nordic cultural ministries have agreed. This entails that our projects are to contribute collectively to elucidating issues within the five thematic areas of that strategy, i.e. the sustainable Nordic region, the creative Nordic region, the intercultural Nordic region, the young Nordic region and the digital Nordic region.
We can initiate our own studies and projects concerning issues that we consider relevant, but we can also be tasked by the Nordic Council of Ministers with conducting special cultural policy studies.
Like our host institution, Kulturanalys Sweden, our work is guided by:
- A broad elucidation of Nordic cultural policy issues
- A scientific working method that ensures independence in relation to issues, interests and actors in the cultural arena, and in relation to the agencies that implement national cultural policy
- A working method that is sensitive to and interactive with the cultural sector
- The premise that our results must be available to and supportive of Nordic cultural policy actors.
